Creek 49-Pasadena Memorial 14

Published August 29, 2010

LEAGUE CITY — From Clear Creek’s first offensive play of the game Saturday, it was apparent it would be C.J. McElroy’s night. However, no one could have guessed he’d have the type of performance that would be hard to replicate even in a video game.

McElroy rushed for two touchdowns, ran for another, threw for one and had a kickoff return for a score in Creek’s 49-14 destruction of Pasadena Memorial at CCISD Memorial Stadium.

McElroy accounted for 388 total yards in the game, scoring on five of his 12 touches. Cramps sidelined him midway through the third quarter, or else the totals could have been even higher.

“This is the most fun I’ve had,” McElroy said. “When I saw those holes open up, I trusted my speed to do the rest. I’m a team player, though, so I’m more excited that we got the win. It’s all about my team first and me second.”

McElroy started his big night with a 20-yard reception, then snagged a 13-yard touchdown later in the drive.

After a Memorial touchdown, McElroy received the kickoff on a reverse handoff and raced 86 yards past the entire Mavs team.

He wasn’t done there. McElroy burst up the middle late in the first quarter for a 53-yard touchdown, using his speed again to blow past Memorial. In the second quarter, on a reverse handoff, McElroy waited for a hole to open up, split two defenders and ran past the safety for a 64-yard score.

“When you have that caliber of an athlete, you get the ball to him as much as possible,” Warden said. “We didn’t set the goal for him to score a touchdown all those ways, but it was definitely in the game plan to find ways to give him the ball.”

McElroy still wasn’t done. On the second play of the third quarter, McElroy had got the ball on a reverse handoff again. This time, he stopped and fired a pass to Tevin Jones about 25 yards downfield.

Jones made a nice adjustment for the pass, then broke three tackles on his way to the 74-yard touchdown.

“I told Tevin before the play that he was going to score,” McElroy said. “Once I saw him catch it, I raised my hands because I knew he was gone.”

That was the end of the night for McElroy after Creek had a 42-14 advantage. He ended up with 143 yards rushing and 85 receiving.

Quarterback Chris Colins threw for 110 yards in his debut under center. Along with the pass to McElroy, he also hit Colby Davis on a 5-yard touchdown to end the second quarter.

Davis scored once more on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, finishing with 84 yards on the night.

McElroy and Warden both credited the offensive line for the 472 total yards of offense.

“The bottom line is all of those holes wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t for the offensive line,” Warden said. “They executed really well tonight. I was impressed.”

Memorial was able to move the ball on the ground for most of the night but had trouble punching it into the end zone. The passing game was atrocious, as the Mavs completed 4 of 14 passes for 21 yards and an interception.

Creek also forced three turnovers in the game. Brandon Martin snagged an interception for the Wildcats, while John Payne also had a good night at linebacker.
